Christopher Walters, Assistant Conductor

Chris Walters is in the Doctor of Musical Arts program in Choral Conducting at Boston University, studying with Dr. Ann Howard Jones. Currently he also serves as Music Director/Organist at First Baptist Church of Wollaston, and maintains a private voice studio.

Prior to Boston, Walters taught for three years in Jacksonville, IL as Vocal Music Director at Jacksonville High School and Turner Junior High – in three years building a fully-graded junior high and high school vocal music program. In 2008, Walters organized a highly successful performance tour to Walt Disney World in Orlando, where the Jacksonville High School Madrigals received a prestigious invitation to sing at the Hall of Presidents. Choirs under his direction have garnered Superior ratings at regional festivals and contests, where they have been consistently praised for their technical accuracy and quality of musicianship.

A young composer, Walters’ original composition Weary with Toil was chosen as the winner of the 2006 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Choral Composition Contest. This piece was premiered at the 2006 ACDA Summer Re-Treat weekend and was conducted by John Rutter’s successor at Clare College (Cambridge, England) – Tim Brown. He is also the recipient of several commissions and grants, including a research-grant for choral composition from Vanderbilt University, resulting in a 30-minute choral cantata based on the story of King David.

In 2007, Walters completed his second year as a conducting apprentice at the Berkshire Choral Festival in Sheffield, where he participated in masterclasses with Jane Glover, Robert Page, and Kathy Saltzman Romey, among others. He holds degrees in music education, sacred music, and choral conducting from Vanderbilt University and Emory University.
